Housing benefit cuts may add to homelessness

housing benefitProposed housing benefit cuts could affect over one million tenants with their housing benefits being reduced by £12 per week on average. This isn’t such good news for landlords who let to tenants who are in receipt of housing benefits.

A recent survey by the National Landlords Association (NLA) shows that the proposed reduction to local housing allowance means that up to 90% of private landlords would be less likely to give tenancy to someone receiving benefits. They simply cannot afford to absorb the weekly reduction in rent.

“While we understand cuts need to be made to bring the burgeoning LHA budget under control, the extent of the planned cuts could lead to serious reductions in the supply of affordable accommodation.” – David Salusbury, NLA Chairman
